Free Expository Transition Bookmarks

This week I'm on Fall Break, which is going way too fast! Next week we'll be back to school and working on Expository text. I have to admit that I'm a little obsessed with making bookmarks for my students. For some reason, they are way more likely use a bookmark as a resource than a sheet of paper.

You can download these bookmarks for free in my store. The different transition words and phrases are organized by structure and are easy to read! The bookmarks come 3 to a page, to conserve your valuable card stock. I have 97 writing students, so I do everything I can to avoid making 97 copies of anything!

Ready for a Book Conference?

A few years ago, I started having book conferences with my students on all the books that they finish.  Yes, it is a little daunting and sometimes I have enlisted the help of an aide or even my mom, but I do believe it is a worthwhile practice.  My students know there is an accountability piece in order to get credit for the books they are completing on the way to reaching the 40 book challenge.  

I try to make the conferences very brief, really only a few minutes.  They bring their book and reading log to the conference.  I check that they have filled out the log on their book, we discuss what genre it is and why, I ask them a couple questions about the book, and I have them read aloud a paragraph to me.  Then I stamp a chart in their log and the one on the bulletin board and they are on their way!  

My students used to just tell me when they finished a book, and I wrote it on a sticky note, but this year I created a spot on the marker board where they can sign up for a conference on their own.  They find their name in the basket and put it under the "I am ready for a book conference!" sign.  This has worked out great, since they don't have to interrupt me when I am conferring with other students, and I already have too many sticky notes on my desk!

Cough Like a Vampire

As an intervention teacher, I teach K-6.  I made a poster that I thought I'd share with you.  While fifth graders SHOULD know how to cough without spreading their germs throughout the room, not all do.

An Apple A Day...Fall Freebie!

Is it really fall?? I can't believe how fast the school year is flying by...

Nichole here, from The Craft of Teaching! Fall is my favorite time of year for so many reasons. The weather, pumpkin EVERYTHING, and finally feeling like the year is in full swing top my list.

Another great part of fall around my classroom is making applesauce! Every year my wonderful mom gets a TON of apples from a neighbor's apple tree. She volunteers to come to my classroom, bring the apples and help the kids make crockpot applesauce! You can check out my previous applesauce posts {here} and {here}.

I am a very lucky girl.

Even 5th graders love observing their fresh apples, writing apple poems and making the applesauce!

This activity always ends up being one of the favorites from the whole year, and kids LOVE how the applesauce makes the room smell and how it tastes.

Favorite applesauce quote from this year? "I will never eat regular applesauce again! I'm only eating FRESH applesauce!"
